How to Download a Private SoundCloud Track (Secret Links)

Someone sends you a SoundCloud link with an odd tail on it — a slash, an s, a dash, then a run of random characters. It plays for you, but the track isn't on the artist's profile and never shows up in search. That's a private upload, and the question that follows is always the same: can you save a copy? Usually yes, for a simpler reason than most people assume.

Here's what private actually means on SoundCloud, why the secret link does all the work, and where the line sits. Blunt version of that last part first: a private track nobody has shared with you cannot be reached — not by us, not by anything — and we won't help anyone guess their way to one.

What a private SoundCloud track actually is

Private on SoundCloud means unlisted, not encrypted. The upload is hidden from the artist's profile, from search, from followers' feeds and from reposts — but it sits on the same servers and streams through the same player. What gates it is a secret token on the end of the URL, something like soundcloud.com/artist/track-name/s-a1B2c3D. A private set is the same idea, with /sets/ in the middle. Anyone holding that complete URL can press play: no account, no login, no invitation.

• Public — listed on the profile, findable in search, streams for everyone.
• Private with a secret link — invisible on the platform, but plays for anyone who has the full URL including the token.
• Private with no link in circulation — never shared, or the link was reset. Nobody outside the uploader's own account can reach it.

That middle state is what this article is about, and the difference isn't a technicality. SoundCloud built secret links so demos reach labels and rough mixes reach clients without anyone creating an account. Possession of the link is the permission — that is what the feature is for.

Why a secret link generally downloads without trouble

Paste that full URL into a downloader and it resolves the same page your browser did, token attached, and SoundCloud serves the same stream it served you. Nothing is decrypted and no protection is defeated, because there is none in play beyond the secrecy of the link. Trim the token and the URL stops resolving for a downloader at the moment it stops resolving for you.

If the link plays in a logged-out browser tab, it will almost certainly download. If it won't play there, nothing can fetch it.

How to download a private track you were sent

1. Open the link in a private window first. If it plays without you being logged in, the token is live.
2. Copy the complete URL from the address bar — or use Share, then Copy Link, on the track page.
3. Paste it into the converter and choose MP3, M4A or FLAC.
4. Give it a few seconds. A song is quick; a two-hour mix takes longer, because the audio is fetched, joined, transcoded and tagged.
5. The file arrives tagged with title, artist and cover art. The temporary server-side copy is deleted shortly after.

• The token is not decoration. Everything from /s- onward is the access — hand-typing, shortening or tidying the link breaks it.
• Copy from the address bar, not the chat message — messaging apps and email clients truncate long links or wrap them in a redirect.
• A private set behaves the same: paste the URL with its token and the playlist downloader works through it one track at a time, so one restricted entry can't sink the batch.
• Your own upload needs a link too — open the track in your account, hit Share, and copy the private link it generates.

The legitimate reasons people do this

• Your own private uploads — masters, works in progress, reference bounces — pulled back down when the original is on a dead laptop.
• A promo or demo an artist or label sent you, as press, radio, a curator, or A&R working offline.
• A client or collaborator sending a mix for approval, when you want it in the car rather than in a browser tab.
• An unreleased edit an artist cleared you to play out, which needs to be a file on a USB stick.

Worth saying plainly: an unlisted link is a private handshake between the sender and you. Keeping a copy for your own listening is ordinary. Forwarding the link, reposting the audio or dropping an unreleased track into a public mix is the artist's call, not yours. What's legal and what isn't covers the wider picture.

What we won't do: guessing or brute-forcing secret links

We get asked, so here's the straight answer: no, and it isn't a disclaimer bolted on for appearances. Secret tokens are random strings. Enumerating them isn't clever URL research — it's trying keys in a lock, on material whose owner deliberately fenced it off. The mechanism rests on having the link meaning you're allowed in, which makes manufacturing links the same thing as breaking in.

SoundyLoader has no database of private tracks, no crawler pointed at unlisted uploads, and no way to see a track without a working link — by design, not omission. Paste a missing, mangled or retired token and you get an honest error, not a workaround. Any site claiming it can download any private SoundCloud track is failing quietly, serving a preview, or worse.

If the link has expired or been revoked

Secret links aren't permanent. An uploader can reset the private link, which retires every copy already in circulation; switch the track to public, after which the plain URL works and the token stops mattering; flip a public track to private; or delete it. From the outside all four look identical — the link stops working.

1. Re-open it logged out. A 404, or a page with no player, means the token is retired or the upload is gone.
2. Check the URL is complete. A link cut short by a chat app fails exactly like a revoked one.
3. If it's your track, copy a fresh private link from the Share panel in your account.
4. If it isn't yours, ask the sender for a new link. Ten seconds for them, and it's the only real fix.
5. If the track has since gone public, drop the token and use the ordinary URL.

The limits that apply to private tracks too

A valid secret link answers the visibility question, not everything else. The honest list is short:

The last two catch people out on private links as often as public ones. If the link is fine but nothing resolves, the private part isn't the problem and no format fixes it — every other failure mode has its own guide.

Which format for a demo, promo or reference mix

SoundCloud streams lossy AAC, roughly 128 to 256 kbps, and nothing downloads better than its source — a 320 kbps label adds file size, never detail. It's also why we output MP3, M4A and FLAC and not WAV: wrapping a lossy stream in an uncompressed container gains gigabytes and no quality.

• Car, phone, sharing with the rest of the band → MP3.
• iPhone and Apple Music → M4A, which stays closest to what SoundCloud actually served.
• Archiving or pulling into a DAW → FLAC, lossless from that point on.
• A USB stick for the club → MP3, every time. rekordbox, Serato and Traktor read FLAC on a laptop, but many Pioneer CDJs — CDJ-2000NXS and older, most club and rental gear — will not play FLAC from USB.

If the track genuinely matters — an unreleased master you're playing out or working on — ask the artist for the original file. A private link is a listening copy of a compressed stream; the file on their drive is the real thing, and most artists send it.

The 30-second checklist

1. Does the link play in a logged-out browser tab? Then it will download.
2. Is the whole URL there, token included, copied from the address bar not a chat window?
3. Set link or track link? /sets/ means a playlist, and it downloads track by track.
4. Nothing working? Ask the sender for a fresh link before assuming anything is broken.
5. Playing it out? MP3 for club USB sticks — and ask about the original file.
6. Sharing it onward? That's the artist's decision, not the downloader's.

That's the whole picture. A secret link you were given is meant to be usable, and saving a copy of a promo, a demo or your own upload is a normal use of it. A track you were never given a link to is closed, and we'd rather say so than sell a fantasy. When you have a working link, the converter takes it from there.
